New Albums

Modest Mouse
This one is quite different than some of their older stuff. It’s more mature… more genre inspecific… and just an all around great album.

Gotan Project
This one’s not new, but it’s new to me. This is one of those that I heard a few times on NPR and it just burned into my memory. If you liked the soundtrack to Amalie, then you may also enjoy this album. It’s similar, though with a latin flare.

Symphony

“Hey Shad”

“Hey James, what’s up?”

“Well, turns out we can’t make it to the symphony tonight and we have these two extra tickets, do you want them?”

“Uh… yeah.”

That’s how it started. He didn’t mention that these were the best seats in the house. He said they were good, but wow. First balcony, all the way to the left, all the way in the front… equivilant to where box seats would be in any other theatre.

Program
Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto In E Minor, Op. 64

Mahler
Symphony No.5 In C# Minor

The Mendelssohn peice was played by a 21yo violin prodogy named Ilya Gringolts. Quite amazing.

Mahler was a little less… happy… darker. He really plays with your expectations. Sets you up for the big and gives you small… plays small, then suddenly BIG, and then small again. And where the hell did that flat note come from and how does it fit so nicely right there where it really shouldn’t fit so nicely.

The mac

What can I say, I’ve come around. Yesterday I purchased a 20″ iMac. What an incredible thing it is. After only 12 hours, I’m totally sold/hooked.

Why?

Here’s the short list.

  1. Everything is integrated… iTunes works with iPhoto works with iMovie works with iDVD works with the Address Book works with… well… you get the idea.
  2. They fixed the stupid task switching problem… in a most ingenious way. First, you have app switching just like in Windows. Only difference is that you switch apps with Apple/Alt-Tab and you then switch windows in that app with Apple/Alt-~. Next, there’s this incredible set of tools they call Expose. It allows you to (with a wave of the wrist and no click… or from the keyboard) cause all the windows to “slide” off of the screen and show the desktop. Also, with a flip of the wrist, you can cause all of your windows to “rearrange” on the screen so you can see everything. Then you click on the window that you want to use. It’s pretty incredible to see. This may seem a silly feature, but for those of use that hit Alt-tab thousands of times a week, this is revolutionary.
  3. There’s a Windows Terminal Service Client that works (and lemme tell you, working on a 20″ screen on my other machine is pretty sweet)
  4. VPN works.
  5. It’s Unix.
  6. iMac,iTunes & iPod together should prove unstoppable.
  7. It’s just pretty (in every way)

More details will follow as I have them…

Air

Music fills
my head is filled to the brim
with the thoughts of sound
filling me with uncertainty about
my life and certainty about life.

Air show was tonight. Great show. Tickets were pricey, but worth every dime. You really can’t beat French people with an incredible sense of rythm.

Tomorrow… a wedding… an old flame… a new flame… house cleaning. What could possibly be next… I’ll be looking forward to every minute.

(H’vin’ Fun!)
